US 281 Freeway Operations Study, Hildalgo County, TX

Brown & Gay Engineers, Inc. analyzed projected traffic conditions along US 281 in Hidalgo County, Texas, a major north-south corridor for the rapidly growing Rio Grande Valley region. The corridor was selected for study by the Texas Department of Transportation because of future traffic demand and proposed construction. The corridor is one of the three planned southern-most segments of Interstate 69, a proposed NAFTA trade route from Mexico to Canada.

US 281 will be widened to six lanes with reconfigured ramps to improve access and reduce congestion. Brown & Gay used CORSIM software to simulate traffic flow through the year 2020 for a 12.5-mile segment from Pharr through Edinburg, and state-of-the-art Traffic Visualization Utility (TRAFVU) for visual animation. The analysis pinpointed potential congestion areas, information valuable to TxDOT in developing final construction plans.
