2008 Gold Medal Award for Natural Living in partnership with General Growth Properties’ Bridgeland development

The centerpiece of the 11,400-acre Bridgeland development in northwest Houston is a system of interconnected lakes and streams. Adding to the complexity of planning for this waterway system, the Harris County Flood Control District was in the midst of adopting new regulations following Tropical Storm Allison in 2001. Our engineers worked closely with the District to achieve balanced compliance between the previous and proposed requirements, assuring that the project could continue without delay.

This one-of-a-kind waterway system is a beautiful amenity and provides added flood control protection and safety for residents. Residents and local wildlife, particularly the area’s vast array of migratory birds, thoroughly enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

BGE Wins Sandcastle Honors

The Brown & Gay Engineers team won the “That’s Entertainment” category at the 21st Annual AIA Sandcastle Competition in Galveston, Texas.  The winning entry, Sandy Feet, a spin-off of the popular movie Happy Feet, featured a 20-foot walrus and his penguin friends relaxing at the beach.  More than 70 BGE employees and their guests participated in the all-day event competing against 82 other teams.

Brown & Gay Engineers competed in the large firm category to win two awards for the 2007 Texas CEC Awards. With only 22 projects selected for awards in Texas, Brown & Gay Engineers was awarded Gold and Silver Awards.
  • 2007 Gold Medal Award for the Brays Bayou Freshwater Tidal Marsh Project, in partnership with the Harris County Flood Control District in Houston, Texas

The Brays Bayou watershed receives runoff from a 128-square-mile area that includes the Texas Medical Center, Houston Zoo, University of Houston and thousands of residences and businesses. Because major flooding events could potentially affect more than 700,000 residents within the Brays Bayou watershed. Harris County Flood Control District, in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has embarked on one of the largest flood damage reduction projects in its 70-year history — the $450 million Project Brays. BGE helped Flood Control achieve their goal of creating a flood reduction facility that also enhances the local environment, fosters community involvement and pride and serves as a model for future wetland creation projects.
  • 2007 Silver Medal Award for the Telfair Bridges Structural Design for Newland Communities' Telfair development in Sugar Land, Texas

As part of its Telfair master planned community in Sugar Land, Texas, Newland Communities wanted two landmark bridges that called to mind the ornate bridges built around Savannah, Georgia, during the nineteenth century. Designing an actual arched bridge would have been more grandiose, and hence costly, than needed for the 100-foot spans required. BGE applied their experience in complex bridge structures to design the look of a complicated and expensive cable superstructure with arches that stand 22 feet above the roadway. The elegant and decorative column-free structures are structurally sound and rated to carry full highway loads.
